Representation of Women in the Media

Sexualised/Objectified Female (Advertising)

The advert above are is banned by the Advertising Standards Agency due to the sexually explicit and suggestive nature. The advert suggest that the woman is engaging in a sexual act. The clothing brand American Apparel releases overtly sexual adverts in order to target their 18-30 year old men/women demographic. Therefore the use of their age demographic in their adverts suggests that their audience will be like the models if they wear the clothing brand. The use of degrading women into performing sexual acts is to showcase the idea that sex sells and the controversy generates attention to the brand in order to generate sales.

Domestic Women (Film and Television)

Desperate Housewives was a drama based around the lives of a group of women living in the iconic Wisteria Lane. The show portrays all the women as housewives which are traditional roles with traditional values - mainly dependent on their husbands for income for their lavish lifestyles, however some wives did get jobs as seasons progressed. The main target audience for the show was 16-40 year old women, they have a broad audience due to the difference in ages of the women however they all play a housewife role at some point in the show. By having the women as housewives it allowed the writers to create drama based storylines within the neighbourhood as the women generally were 'stay at home' wives. The show although created for drama did emphasise old and lingering domestic stereotypes for women.

Post Feminism (Music Video)

Britney Spears plays four roles in the Womanizer video including; domestic housewife, office worker, private chauffeur and waitress. This done in order to create the idea that the woman is playing the guy and she knows he is unfaithful. In the post feminism era, Britney generally uses her body as a way to entice her audience and to show that sex is a dominant ideology - even in her Blackout (public meltdown) era. She first plays a domestic goddess role cooking and serving her male 'counterpart' before changing to a strong, independent office worker. The office worker role dominates the male by seducing him, then abusing him which shows female empowerment. The chorus reads 'I know what you are' showing that she is not stupid and he cannot lie to her. She then changes to a waitress whereby she is subservient to him, however she again lures him in before abusing him which shows her dominance - which contrasts with the server/customer role. She then changes to a private chauffeur (above) who controls the situation, the body language suggests that he is fearing for his life whereas she is calm and collected. Multiple shots throughout the video show Britney naked in a steam room, using her body to entice the audience. She changes back to the housewife role before dominating her lover and getting rid of him. The song relates to the audience as people are cheated on all the time and she shows female empowerment by saying that women aren't stupid and aren't to be underestimated - the song chants 'Womanizer' throughout to label cheaters and unfaithfulness.

Mock Exam Reflection

Audience Question
I could have improved by using all the correct media language which was appropriate for the question, I could have also explained my examples in more detail as this would have given me more marks. I need to ensure that I explore the connotations of the magazine covers and ensure I do not miss out any important details on the cover, generally I am happy with the score I achieved on the question however understand that there are areas for improvement.

Representation Question
I achieved 7 on both of the questions, the first question I could have developed who the other audiences were and justify why they could be considered to be second audiences. However on the second question it was purely down to misunderstanding and I would need to revise more around this question and apply theories in my answer.

Revision and study
Although I believed I did a good amount of revision, I will ensure that I focus more on the terminology and the detail of examples - by researching and solidifying examples.

Coursework
I am happy with the coursework that I have produced, however more guidance maybe needed in the report aspect of the coursework.

Group Analysis of Women in Media

Shape magazine appeals to women due to the content and objective of making women feel better about their bodies by giving diet and exercise routines and help. By featuring coverlines that appeal mainly to bettering your appearance like; 'Slimmer Next Week' and 'Stop belly bloat fast'. By featuring Kim Kardashian on the cover it suggests that reading this magazine will get you her body, by featuring her and the coverline 'I'll never be one of those skinny girls, so what?' goes against representations of women being skinny models as she is a curvy woman and speaks out about current stereotypes and is considered to be a 'typical' model due to her curves. The cover lines in yellow are typically about relationships or personal stories, or advice to the readers about their body whereas the writing in white is mainly showing routines or the cover girls name. The mast-head meets stereotypical feminine colours as it is a pink which works alongside other pink/purple writing but also Kim's purple bikini. Her eyes are engaging the audience by overlapping the masthead.

Nuts magazine is an infamous 'lads mag' and appeals to men due to the content of the magazine and the way the women on the covers are represented as sexual objects. In this instance the model is wearing lingerie, has blonde hair and has a skinny frame therefore fitting the stereotypical image of a model. All the models on the cover conform to this character of having an innocent face to contrast with what they're wearing, it also makes the men feel like they can dominate the girls. This magazine can appeal to women readers however the main audience would be men as they would be interested in the images but also interested in the male related subjects like cars and motor sports. The language is very aimed towards the type of male that buys the magazine, words like 'sexiest' and 'topless' clearly identify who the magazine is aimed at, the language and colours used are engaging to the audience as they are clearly visible and compliment the lingerie colour. The language is simplistic and does not take a person with a degree to read and understand it. The main models eyes are faced directly on the masthead in order to engage the audience.

Vogue magazine is one of the leading fashion magazines in the world, its main appeal to women is the subject of fashion and seeing designer brands and labels walked down catwalks. The model for this cover, being Lady Gaga is seen in a designer dress - striving away from her usual outlandish style, as expected from a infamous fashion magazine, the model has been photoshopped in order to be promoting that skinny is good and only models should wear designer clothes. Therefore, after being digitally enhanced she is now conforming to the stereotypical runway model by having a skinny waist and being tall. The illusion dress creates the image that although she is tall she still has curves, this being false as her body has been totally manipulated to be more like a tall, skinny model. The language again is subject specific as it features words like 'fall fashion' and 'designers' therefore creating who the target audience is - fashion savvy readers. By saying that the issue is a special edition makes the audience be more willing to buy it as it appears to be a collectors item, this also emphasised by the gold writing. The models head overlaps the masthead therefore having her eyes engaging the audience, the red ribbon again emphasises that there is a unique quality about this issue.

Album Cover Proposal

Front cover #1
The original artwork will be a close up of a pair of glitter high heels with a high exposure filter, the background will be a white wall in order to emphasise the heels. The font I am choosing to use is 'Colours of Autumn' as I believe it reflects my artist the best - being crazy and outlandish. I will use low key lighting to imply that this photo was taken at a party. The theme of glitter is seen throughout the cover with the use of the shoes.

Back Cover #1
Again I will use the 'Colours of Autumn' font as again I believe it reflects my artist and portrays her as a party girl. The back cover will feature lines of glitter with a heart of glitter - this mirroring the song 'Cocaine Hearts' a rolled up dollar/pound note will be placed in shot in order to emphasise the drug. High key lighting will be used to bring out the plain white background and reflect off the multi-coloured glitter lines. For the typography I will use a fuchsia font as this stands out to the audience to read the song titles. Typical to albums the barcode and record label information will be placed in the bottom right to not distract the audience from the songs.

 Front Cover #2
The second cover will feature the model in heart shape sunglasses and hold a sign that says 'Will Sing For Vodka', my artists name will be featured next to the artist but I will not be adding an album name as I believe it will distract attention from the sign. The door handle will be pictured in order to create the idea of a house party.

Back Cover #2
The final background will be of the artist lying in a bath of balloons, the writing will be next to the artist and she will be wearing sunglasses to cover her eyes and to create a hungover impression. I will use the same font - 'Colours of Autumn' but in a cyan colour. I will use high exposure to bring out the colour of the bath tub but also the colour of the balloons and sunglasses. A bottle of alcohol will be seen in the shot to again emhasise the party theme. The colour red will be a strong colour in the artwork as it suggests love and lust. High key lighting will be used again to bring out the individual colours of the balloons and bath.
